Triathlete sells body ads for charity

PHOENIX — In today’s tough economic climate, many businesses hesitate to invest in conventional and expensive advertising campaigns. But a local triathlete has developed a new platform to help them stand out from the crowd: his body.

Adam Fuller, a native Phoenician and Arizona State University alum, is selling advertising space on his legs, arms, neck and face to be displayed during the Lavaman triathlon on April 1, 2012 in Hawaii.

“Everybody and their mother is buying ads on Facebook,” said Fuller, a full-time social media strategist. “But you know what would really catch people’s attention? An ad on my face instead.”

The ads are designed to give businesses a unique and cost-effective alternative to traditional advertising while allowing them to stand out in a market flooded with commercials, product placement and cookie-cutter marketing promotions.

What’s more, he’s donating all of the proceeds from ad sales to charity.

Fuller is part of Team In Training (TNT) and has committed to raise $4,100 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS). The effort, titled “Tri for Les,” is in honor of his aunt Leslie Whitfield who lost a 19-year battle with breast cancer in February of 2011.

The money raised from his billboard promotion will go to support the LLS mission: to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families.

“It’s a huge challenge for a great cause, so I had to get creative with my fundraising tactics.” Fuller said. “I hope people have some fun with it and businesses take advantage of the opportunity.”

In addition, the ads will be featured on the Tri for Les fundraising website and Facebook page to give the supporting businesses and contributors even more positive exposure.

Pricing starts at $50 for leg placement, $100 for arm, $500 for neck and $1,000 for face.* To purchase an ad go to triforles.com/bodyads.
